Ghanese bronze charm

Ask a question

Most bronze beads from West Africa are made with the 'lost wax' method. Through a syringe or an empty bic pen almost molten wax is poored and so a thin wax wire is created. This wire is arranged in a pattern around a ball (or triangle, or square) made of charcoal and earth. This wax-clad ball will be dipped in a mixture of water and charcoal, in order to obtain a good sharp cast. This all is covered with a blend of earth and organic material, with a small hole; the channel. After three days of drying in the sun the whole is heated; the molten wax leaves through the channel whereafter molten bronze can be poored in. After cooling the clay is removed and the bead washed in lemonjuice with salt.
